My Favorite Shops in Ericeira

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For me, one of the most beautiful things is a well curated surf shop. Good vibes, beautiful boards and enticing interiors; I will spend both a lot of time and a lot of money in your shop. And whilst I have been here in Ericeira I have started to compile a list of the most well put together and thought-out stores I can find.

There is definitely an abundance of vibey surf shops here in Ericiera, but I have found that many just sell the same stuff. All the big surf brands, same clothes, same shtick to draw in the noobs, kooks and tourists. I like to think that none of these titles belong to me…

So, without further ado, here is my little list of beautiful shops that I have found and love in Ericeira… (If anything they are just pretty to look at and go into for a window-shop)….

Saints at Sea

I first discovered this shop when I visited Ericeira in March and I absolutely fell in love with it. Neutral tones, ocean inspired interiors and a beautiful range of linen clothing. The business itself runs an interior design service, as well as having a shop stocked full of ‘treasures, curiosities, goods and garments’ drawn from ‘slow-living’ ideals. They also run workshops centered around ceramics and tiles - both art forms having deep rooted history and traditions in this part of Portugal. When I first visited, the shop was collaborating with Magic Quiver (another shop on this list) and had the most aesthetically pleasing range of surfboards all over the shop. Furthermore, Saints at Sea have a lovely range of surfing and ocean books - I could definitely spend a lot of money here!

Me and my friends visiting in March.

_biloba

_biloba has a very well curated range of clothes an accessories - all portraying a skate and beachy vibe. However, for me, what I love most is A) the teal walls and B) a brand called Femo, that the shop stocks. Femo is a surf brand that make hand printed clothing, art and beautiful hand carved long board fins - the whole brand is based on ‘artisanal skills’. And it goes perfectly with _biloba’s range of products.

Magic Quiver

This shop may be little but it has a big range of surfboards on offer. From an in-shop and online range to custom orders from Portuguese shapers and imports from the big Californian brands. The new shop (interior-designed by Saints at Sea) also has a range of clothing and swimwear alongside a library of surf magazines and coffee table books. Again, I could easily spend a lot of money at Magic Quiver and I do enjoy spending a lot of time in the two story shop sitting and reading the books I can’t afford to buy.

Mothersurf

A newer discovery of mine, I passed this shop on a night out and went back the next day and had some trouble finding Mothersurf whilst sober…. oops. Having said that, I’m very glad that I did manage to find it again! There is so much on offer to support a more sustainable lifestyle, especially eco-friendly surf products. Mothersurf was ‘created to inspire and promote an eco-conscious lifestyle, offering an alternative that is environmentally and socially responsible’. The business also sells second hand surfboards as well as running a large online shop. And if you are feeling tired whilst on your shopping trip, Mothersurf sell coffee and has a few tables outside - a nice little set up.

Wavegliders

What I love most about this shop is their range of books (all surf and ocean and outdoors related, obviously). I recently purchased a book called Women on Waves from Wavegliders - it had been on my wish list for a long time and as soon as I saw it on the shelf, I had to buy it; it has definitely been worth the 30 euros it cost me! Like my love for Magic Quiver, I like to take some time in the afternoons to go and sit in Wavegliders so that I can flick through the new books and magazines they have in. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the brand makes their own surfboards for custom orders, with a range of their own boards on display in the shop. The shop manages to do a lot with the little space it has. Good vibes all around.

So there you have it, my favorite shops in Ericeira. The places that I consider to be the most beautiful due to their curation of products, interior design and, lets be honest, range of books (to me books are beautiful). If you are ever in the town or area, definitely go and visit them, you wont regret the experience. And I think that supporting local businesses is really important, especially in places like Ericeira where the tourist season is so important.

Happy shopping! (Or in my case, window-shopping because I am a student and therefore broke-ish and therefore can’t afford much from these shops).

*Side note - Biju has the best jewellery in town!
